Commissioning a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture is an exciting endeavor. I am happy to work with you to find out exactly what you are looking for and create a unique piece that will last you a lifetime. Working as both a designer and maker provides me with unique insights into the construction process.

The Commission Process:

  1. Provide as much detail as you care to share for your custom project (dimensions, photo references, sketches, practical needs, etc). At this point, I can provide a rough estimate of costs.
  2. Based on your preferences and requirements, I will create a unique design along with a scale rendering for you to review. There is a design deposit for this process that varies depending on the complexity of the design.
  3. Once you are happy with the design, I can provide an accurate quote for the costs of material/labour and the timeline to completion. We will request a 40-60% deposit and get to work as soon as payment is received.

Pricing and Payment:

Every project has three payment stages:

  • Design fee of $50-$350 per item. This fee covers design work only. It is not put towards the cost of the project.

  • Project deposit of 50%

  • Final payment of remaining 50% balance

Once designs, materials, timeline, and price have been established and clients are ready to move forward with the build, the project deposit of 50% is due. The final balance is due before furniture is sent out for delivery, or released for pickup. Accepted forms of payment include e-transfer (preferred), online bank payment, and cash.

What I need from you:

The first step to any commission is reaching out to discuss the project in as much detail as possible. Most projects start with a few emails or phone calls. When inquiring about custom furniture, here are some guidelines that will help me better understand your wishes:

  • Function – What is it and what will it be used for?
    • Does it have specific practical or functional needs? Storage space, drawers, seating, etc.
  • Dimensions – Are there any size requirements or restrictions?
    • Does it need to fit in corner, have a certain height, or fit any number of people?
  • Style – What style are you looking for? Does it need to match another piece?
    • Minimal, modern, Danish, Japanese?
  • References – Images of your space along with a rough sketch of the piece you are looking to commission are invaluable.
    • It can also be helpful to provide aesthetic references for the design.
  • Wood Species – What wood species are you looking for? I am happy to show examples and provide insight if you are stuck.
    • White oak, Walnut, Cherry, Maple, Ash, etc.
  • Budget - How much are you looking to spend?
    • Please be thoughtful and reasonable here. Custom furniture of the quality I produce is an investment.
  • Delivery – Will it need to be delivered, and if so are there any restrictions that may inform the design?
    • Narrow doorways, stairs, tight corners, etc.
